Instructions
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Batter
- In a large mixing bowl, combine chopped okra, onion, cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and optional spices.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until combined. The batter should be thick but spoonable.
2. Heat the Oil
- Heat about ½ inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Drop a small amount of batter into the oil—if it sizzles immediately, it’s ready.
3. Fry the Okra Patties
- Using a spoon or scoop, drop tablespoon-sized portions of batter into the hot oil.
- Flatten slightly with the back of the spoon to form patties.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
4. Serve & Enjoy
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
- Garnish with chopped green onions or parsley for extra flavor.
Notes
Tips for the Best Okra Patties
✅ Use fresh okra – The fresher, the better for great texture and flavor.
✅ Don’t overcrowd the pan – Cook in small batches for even frying.
✅ Adjust the spice level – Add cayenne pepper or jalapeños for extra heat.
✅ Want extra crispiness? – Use more cornmeal and less flour.
✅ Make them gluten-free – Use gluten-free flour instead of all-purpose.
