Ingredients
For the Steak:
- 1 lb ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak (room temperature)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon butter (for searing)
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)
For the Horseradish Sauce:
- ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt & pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives or parsley, chopped (optional)
For Assembling the Sandwich:
- 4 slices ciabatta, sourdough, or French baguette (toasted)
- 1 cup arugula or baby spinach
- ½ red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting bread)
- Optional toppings: caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, melted cheese (cheddar, provolone, or Swiss)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Horseradish Sauce
- In a small bowl, mix together:
- Sour cream (or Greek yogurt)
- Horseradish
- Dijon mustard
- Worcestershire sauce
- Lemon juice
- Garlic powder
- Salt & pepper
- Stir until smooth and creamy.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes (flavors get even better over time!).
Step 2: Cook the Steak
- Pat the steak dry with paper towels to help it sear beautifully.
- Rub both sides with:
- Olive oil
- Salt & pepper
- Garlic powder
- Smoked paprika
- Worcestershire sauce
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat until very hot.
- Add 1 tablespoon butter and place the steak in the pan.
- Cook for:
- 3-4 minutes per side (for medium-rare)
- 5-6 minutes per side (for medium)
- In the last minute, add fresh thyme or rosemary for extra flavor.
- Remove from heat and let the steak rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
Step 3: Toast the Bread
- Spread butter on the bread slices.
- Toast in a pan or oven until golden brown and crispy.
Step 4: Assemble the Sandwich
- Spread horseradish sauce generously on both sides of the toasted bread.
- Layer on:
- Fresh arugula or baby spinach
- Thinly sliced steak
- Red onions (or caramelized onions for extra sweetness)
- Top with extra sauce and any optional toppings (cheese, mushrooms, etc.).
- Close the sandwich and slice in half for the perfect bite.
