To make soft and flavorful sourdough naan, you’ll need:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240g) sourdough starter (active or discard)
  • 2 ½ cups (300g) all-purpose or bread flour
  • ½ cup (120g) plain yogurt (adds softness and slight tang)
  • ¼ cup (60ml) warm water (as needed for hydration)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, enhances fermentation)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (for brushing, optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, yogurt, flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and olive oil.
  2. Add warm water a little at a time until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not too sticky.
  3. Knead the dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth.

Step 2: Rest & Ferment

  • Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rest at room temperature for 4–6 hours (or overnight in the fridge for deeper flavor).

Step 3: Divide & Shape

  1. Once the dough has risen slightly, divide it into 6–8 equal balls.
  2. Roll each ball into a thin oval or circle (about ¼-inch thick).

Step 4: Cook on a Hot Skillet

  1. Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Place a rolled-out naan on the hot pan and cook for 1–2 minutes until bubbles form.
  3. Flip and cook the other side for another 1–2 minutes until golden brown and slightly charred.

Step 5: Brush with Butter & Serve

  • Remove from the skillet and brush with melted butter or ghee for extra flavor.
  • Serve warm with your favorite dips or dishes!
