Ingredients
- 1 cup (240g) sourdough starter (active or discard)
- 2 ½ cups (300g) all-purpose or bread flour
- ½ cup (120g) plain yogurt (adds softness and slight tang)
- ¼ cup (60ml) warm water (as needed for hydration)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, enhances fermentation)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- 2 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (for brushing, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Mix the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, yogurt, flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and olive oil.
- Add warm water a little at a time until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not too sticky.
- Knead the dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
Step 2: Rest & Ferment
- Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rest at room temperature for 4–6 hours (or overnight in the fridge for deeper flavor).
Step 3: Divide & Shape
- Once the dough has risen slightly, divide it into 6–8 equal balls.
- Roll each ball into a thin oval or circle (about ¼-inch thick).
Step 4: Cook on a Hot Skillet
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
- Place a rolled-out naan on the hot pan and cook for 1–2 minutes until bubbles form.
- Flip and cook the other side for another 1–2 minutes until golden brown and slightly charred.
Step 5: Brush with Butter & Serve
- Remove from the skillet and brush with melted butter or ghee for extra flavor.
- Serve warm with your favorite dips or dishes!
