Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup minced onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (10.75 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced onion, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together well, then shape the mixture into 4 patties.
- Cook the Onions and Garlic: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onions are softened and fragrant.
- Make the Gravy: Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, water, and Worcestershire sauce, combining all ingredients to create a smooth sauce.
- Simmer the Patties: Carefully place the beef patties in the skillet, spooning some of the sauce over the top. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the beef patties are cooked through and the sauce is thickened.
- Serve: Serve the smothered hamburger steaks over a bed of mashed potatoes or rice, spooning extra gravy over the top.
