MY FAVORITE CASSEROLE – CABBAGE CASSEROLE

With its tender cabbage, sweet onions, and a crispy, golden topping, it’s a dish that’s as comforting as it is flavorful. Plus, it’s easy to customize with your favorite cheeses, proteins, or seasonings.

Ingredients

  • 1 small head green cabbage (chopped into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 medium Vidalia onion (chopped)
  • 8 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for a cheesy twist)
  • ½ cup crushed Ritz crackers or breadcrumbs (for a crispy topping)
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika (adds a subtle depth of flavor)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat & Prep

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or casserole dish.

Step 2: Cook the Cabbage & Onions

  1. In a large skillet, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and translucent (about 5 minutes).
  3. Stir in chopped cabbage, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is slightly softened.

Step 3: Assemble the Casserole

  1. Transfer the cooked cabbage and onions to the prepared baking dish.
  2. Pour the remaining 4 tablespoons of melted butter over the top.
  3. If using cheese, sprinkle ½ cup shredded cheddar evenly over the cabbage mixture.
  4. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers) with garlic powder, paprika, and a bit of melted butter, then sprinkle over the casserole for a crispy topping.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  2. Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
