German Cucumber Salad

When we think of German cuisine, hearty dishes like schnitzel and bratwurst often come to mind. However, Germany also boasts an array of refreshing, lighter fare perfect for those warm summer months. One such dish is the traditional German cucumber salad, known as “Gurkensalat.” This dish offers a delightful contrast to the heavier staples, featuring crisp cucumbers enveloped in a creamy, tangy dressing.

Ingredients

  • 2 large cucumbers, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, vinegar, sugar, dill, salt, and pepper. Whisk well until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Add the thinly sliced cucumbers and red onion to the bowl with the dressing. Toss gently to ensure all the slices are evenly coated.
  3. Cover and refrigerate the salad for at least one hour to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve chilled as a refreshing side dish.

Notes

This simple yet flavorful salad is sure to be a hit at your next gathering or a pleasant surprise at the family dinner table!
