Baked Apples

What’s so special about this dessert is that almost everyone has tried it—and many have passed down their family recipe. While there are variations, the classic method involves coring whole apples, stuffing them with a mixture of butter, brown sugar, spices, and sometimes nuts or raisins, then baking them until tender.

Ingredients

  • 4 large baking apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup apple cider or water (for baking dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Core apples, removing the seeds and creating a cavity, but don’t cut through the bottom.
  3. In a bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, nuts, and raisins.
  4. Stuff each apple with the mixture, then top each with a pat of butter.
  5. Place apples in a baking dish, add cider or water to the bottom to prevent sticking.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until apples are tender and sauce is bubbling.
  7. Let cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Variations on a Classic

Part of the enduring appeal of baked apples is how easily they can be customized:

  • Savory twist – Add a touch of sea salt and herbs like rosemary for a unique flavor.
  • Vegan version – Swap butter for coconut oil and use maple syrup instead of sugar.
  • Stuffed with granola – For extra crunch and a breakfast-worthy treat.
  • Drizzled with caramel – For an indulgent, crowd-pleasing finish.
