- 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed

Instructions

- In a large, wide saucepan, combine blackberries, water, 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and lemon extract. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

- For the dumplings, mix together flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar, baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, nutmeg, and milk until just combined.

- Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling batter into the simmering blackberry mixture. Cover tightly and allow to simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
